Tiptoe addresses issues of race, class, and gender in relationship to colonialism/postcolonial society. A video projection reveals the lower legs of a Creole woman, from just below the knee, as she tiptoes, endlessly, through a 19th century, colonial, “plateau” house on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. This woman is graceful, unobtrusive, and always very careful. She exists in the shadows, in liminal space. It is from this inconspicuous place that she tends to her responsibilities. Both she and those whose lives she keeps in balance seem to have agreed that a Creole woman should strive towards invisibility, anonymity and silence…
